Course Description:

This POST Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) scenario-based training course is designed for experienced detectives who are assigned to investigate law enforcement involved critical incidents including officer-involved shootings, use of force incidents and in- custody deaths.

Designed for experienced detectives, this scenario based training course will focus on critical incidents, including: officer-involved shootings; use of force incidents; and in- custody deaths. Participants will be assigned to an investigative team, respond to a different use of force incident scene, and conduct an investigation into the scenario incident. Investigation techniques will include crime scene management and documentation, conducting interviews, and evidence collection. A participant presentation to a panel of experts will culminate this training. Topics covered throughout this course include understanding stakeholders, lawful and unlawful force, physiological and psychological changes (human factors), administrative and criminal investigations, legal considerations and courtroom testimony, crime scene reconstruction, video forensics, electronic control weapon (ECW) incidents, excited delirium related issues and contemporary critical incident case studies.

Course Prerequisites:

  1. Currently working in an investigative unit
  2. Completion of the POST online “Search Warrant Fundamentals” class on the POST Learning Portal https://lp.post.ca.gov/post/default.aspx

Tuition: $1,388.00

Special Note regarding Tuition for ICI Classes: POST has suspended funding to most ICI courses effective April 1, 2018. GTA/RTC will continue to present the course, but will need to charge a tuition to cover the cost of the course. Effective April 1, 2018, the tuition for this course is $1,388.00 per student. You can pay the tuition fee by either sending or bringing a check to class or call this office with a credit card number.

POST Reimbursement Plan IV: Tuition is $1,388.00 for POST reimbursable agencies. While student travel and per diem reimbursement are normally reimbursable via Training Reimbursement Request (TRR) for this course, POST has temporarily suspended tuition and travel reimbursement for all courses, with the exception of classes outlined in POST Bulletin No. 2017-39. This course is not listed as an exempt course.

Non-POST Reimbursable agencies: Tuition is $1,388.00. There is no reimbursement for travel and per diem.
