Course Description

This course will focus on building and developing the skills of a detective supervisor (sergeant) or manager (lieutenant) to effectively and efficiently run a detective unit. A failure to properly investigate a criminal case can and has led to criminals going free, convictions overturned and civil liability for a cause of action called “Negligent Investigation.” Supervisors and managers who lack the proper training and experience to ensure that a criminal incident is properly investigated expose themselves and their agency to possible civil liability and punitive damages. This course will emphasize both leadership skills and interpersonal communication. This course is for all law enforcement agencies and members, sworn and non-sworn, that have supervisory or managerial responsibility for detective units.

This course is restricted to those supervisors or managers that have detective operations oversight, unless there is prior approval from their agency OR there is space available in the course. This course is an Institute of Criminal Investigations (ICI) elective.
